Elwyn Lynn (1917–1997) was a major force in Australian post-war art. Self-taught, he developed a distinctive abstract style using textured surfaces, sand, rope, plaster and found materials, creating works that feel weathered and tied to the Australian landscape. Beyond painting, Lynn shaped the art world as editor of the Contemporary Art Society’s Broadsheet, a prominent critic, and curator of the Power Gallery, where he helped introduce international modernism to Australia. Winner of the Wynne Prize and a Member of the Order of Australia, his work is held in every major gallery and his influence remains profound.
